Earth Day

In honour of Canada's 150th Birthday, events have been organized across the country to celebrate Earth Day.  Focus is on the great outdoors to foster appreciation for Mother Nature and all she has to offer. Now, more than ever, especially with our increasing preoccupation with computers and dependance on technological devices, it's important to remember that these items are conveniences, not essential for our daily existence (I know, hard for the younger generation to imagine) but true nonetheless. This day, make an effort to leave your technological gadgets in the house while you go outside and enjoy the fresh air.  If the air where you live is not so fresh, that's exactly the point of Earth day/week/month.  This is the time to do something beneficial [...]

Earth Month

April is "Earth Month"! April 20 - 26 is Earth Week & April 22nd is Earth Day! And for those of us living in colder, northern regions of the planet, April is the first full month of spring.  The snow has melted (or is melting), bulbs are sprouting out of the ground and blooming, buds are showing up on shrubs and trees.  It's a time of rebirth filled with hope and anticipation after a long cold winter. But we cannot take these things for granted anymore.  Modern civilisation, growing populations, industry & waste have all taken their toll on our planet, which is why we dedicate this month to pay special recognition to the planet that sustains us.  So, during this month, every year, think [...]

Farmer’s Markets

Considering the poor quality of food available to us at grocery stores nowadays, it's all the more reason to shop at farmer's markets and buy local produce that hasn't had to travel thousands of miles to get here.  And unless you choose "Certified Organic" products, there's just no telling if a GMO seed was used to grow that crop, what type of soil a food was grown in, what type of fertilizer was applied to maximize growth, what pesticides were applied to the crop etc...  Not to mention if ethical labour practices were used to cultivate said crop.  So many things to consider that affect the nutritional value of the living foods we eat!  Are your food choices nourishing your body or making you sick?  [...]

Love Animals? Which Ones Deserve Your Love?

Of Course We Love Animals! Many of us love animals, but if you're an animal lover, exactly what does that mean? Does it mean you love only cats? Or cats & dogs? Or only horses? Do bunnies count? What about gerbils and finches? How about farm animals like cows and pigs and sheep and chickens? Do they count? Some people eat wild animals so they hunt them for their meat. Some people like hunting wild animals for the "trophy" of a stuffed head. What about all the people who like to eat meat but don't like to hunt? Do farm animals deserve your love? Selective Love These are questions most of us would rather not answer because we'd have to draw a clear line somewhere. [...]
